Jaafar Jackson is getting his first major acting honor for his first major role. The Critics Choice Association announced that Jackson will receive its Actor Award – Film at the ninth annual Celebration of Black Cinema & Television for playing Michael Jackson in the biopic “Michael,” a performance that doubled as his feature debut.
There is an unusual family symmetry to the recognition. Jackson, a real-life nephew of the late pop star, carried a studio tentpole built entirely around the man and the catalog, and the industry’s response has now moved from box office to awards attention.
A debut that opened enormous
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and released by Lionsgate in the United States, “Michael” became one of the year’s defining commercial stories. Variety and Forbes both reported that the film crossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, which Variety framed as a first for the biopic genre. For a debut lead, anchoring a film at that scale is about as high-stakes an entry point as the movies offer.
The cast around Jackson is deep — Colman Domingo, Nia Long, Miles Teller, Laura Harrier and Mike Myers among them — but the picture lives or dies on its central impersonation, which is why the lead performance has drawn the most scrutiny and, now, the first trophy.
What the Critics Choice honor is
The award will be presented at the Critics Choice Association’s ninth annual Celebration of Black Cinema & Television, set for November 16 in Los Angeles. The organization said the ceremony will be hosted by Roy Wood Jr. and will premiere on the association’s YouTube channel in December. Other figures from film and television are being honored across the evening.
In announcing the slate, the association’s executive producer Shawn Edwards tied the event to a larger mission, saying the group “stands firmly committed to recognizing the best in Black cinema and television.” It is a themed showcase rather than a competitive ceremony, which means the honor functions as a statement of regard rather than the result of a head-to-head vote.
For Jackson, the timing matters. A billion-dollar opening proves a film connects; an acting citation, even an honorary one, is the industry signaling that it took the performance seriously and not just the subject. Whether that translates into attention during the wider awards season is the open question, but the first credit on that résumé is now in.
