Launching a television channel is a scheduling problem as much as a branding one: you have one shot at a first impression, and you need something people already want to watch. Sony Pictures Networks India made the obvious, effective choice for its new Tamil channel, Sony Vizha, pairing the launch with a bona fide box-office hit.

The channel went on air on October 19 under the tagline “Ithu Namma Vibe,” pitched by its parent company as a general-entertainment network rooted in contemporary Tamil Nadu — its language, food, music and celebrations. ThePrint reported the launch as a bid to carve out a distinctly Tamil space in a competitive regional market.

A festive-weekend premiere

The marquee programming moment came fast. As a Vijayadashami special, Sony Vizha gave over a prime afternoon slot on October 20 to the television premiere of “Good Bad Ugly,” the Ajith Kumar action vehicle that played theaters in 2025. Directed by Adhik Ravichandran and produced by Mythri Movie Makers, with music by G.V. Prakash Kumar, the film pairs Ajith with Trisha Krishnan and a large supporting cast.

Scheduling a proven crowd-pleaser against a festival weekend is textbook strategy. Families are home, the mood is celebratory, and a familiar star draws viewers who might not otherwise sample a channel on day two of its existence. The film becomes the on-ramp; the hope is that some of those viewers stick around for everything else.

What the channel is betting on

Beyond the movie, the network is anchoring itself with recognizable formats. ThePrint noted launch plans that include Tamil editions of established reality franchises — a cooking competition fronted by Samantha Ruth Prabhu and a singing contest associated with A.R. Rahman — the sort of star-powered tentpoles designed to give a young channel appointment viewing.

A company executive framed the move in straightforward terms. “The launch of Sony VIZHA marks an important step in our ambition to build a distinctive Tamil entertainment offering,” Rajaraman S, a senior content officer at the network, said in comments reported by MediaNews4u.

The broader story is about how regional television keeps growing. National players increasingly treat language-specific channels not as niche add-ons but as serious businesses worth launching with full fanfare — and the fastest way to announce one is to put a film everyone already loves in the best slot of the opening weekend.
